First the bees and now the bats. Even if you don't like either one for their own unique attributes as sentient beings (how can people not like bees and bats?), they are amazingly important to crops. Bees in the pollination process and bats in the getting rid of harmful insects process.
Is anyone else out there worried?

Have you read the story "Bats at the Beach" to your children? We really like it!
I love bats! But unfortunately neither bats or bees are cute cuddly creatures, no matter how essential they are, which sadly seems to matter when it comes to public interest. Now if we were talking about koala bears and butterfly's I am sure we could get some attention.
"If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live." Albert Einstein
Leeanthro, I'll check out "Bats at the Beach". We have several bat books, the kids kind of have a thing for bats, but I haven't seen that one. Josie likes to have her head hang down and Parker says she must have been a bat in a past life.
Stef, I know what you mean...cute and cuddly or no one cares. I love and am terrified at the same time by the Einstein quote.
This is quite troubling!
I have come to the conclusion the lack of bees is why my garden, and others so I have heard, did not do so well last year. And now it is like a domino effect or something...
What next?
Very troubling indeed!
I agree with you about Einstein's quote!!
I had a customer over the other day who is an entomologist and we talked for a long time about the bees disappearing...did not make me feel any better that if for sure! I need to look at what research on this is going on at the U of I since it sounds like the head of the department is on the cutting edge of trying to solve this mystery.
Saw this and thought of you...

I made the mistake of planting Sedum 'Autumn Joy' in the backyard right by where my daughter plays. It was covered in bees last year. I need to move them to the front yard this spring. I don't think it would be a pleasant experience for anyone if she gets stung.
There is no shortage of bees (or butterflies or birds) in our yard in the summertime. I have a love-hate relationship with them!
